What is the DBS Update Service?
Also known as: Update Service, DBS online status check
The DBS Update Service is an annual subscription that keeps a DBS certificate up to date, so it can be reused when changing roles. With the person's permission, an employer can do a free online status check to see whether any new information has been added since the certificate was issued.
When someone joins the Update Service, their DBS certificate is kept up to date. If they move to a new role that needs the same type and level of check for the same workforce, the new employer can carry out an online status check instead of asking for a new DBS application. The check tells you whether the certificate is still current or whether new information has come to light, in which case you would ask for a new check.
Individuals must join within 30 days of the date of issue on their certificate, or they will need a new check before they can join. The subscription is paid annually by the individual (it is currently £16 a year) and is free for volunteers. The employer needs the person’s consent and the original certificate to do a status check.
Why it matters for your setting
- Status checks are quick and free for employers, which helps when recruiting sessional tutors or supply staff.
- You still need to see the original certificate and check it matches the role and workforce.
- Some settings run periodic status checks for existing staff as part of good safeguarding practice.
